Lie
Bormans
Lie Bormans is an architectural engineer whose work focuses on digitally fabricated concrete formwork.
In 2021, Lie obtained an MSc in Civil Engineering-Architecture from KU Leuven. Her thesis research led to the development of 'Robotic Serendipity', a novel approach that integrates robotics, material manipulation, and craft processes to generate unique concrete surface textures. This work was realized in collaboration with DMOA architects and the Research[x]Design lab of the KUL and was awarded the Henry van de Velde Award in 2024.
Lie gained hands-on experience working as a project architect, combining design responsibilities with on-site execution.
Work Topic
Lie works as a research assistant for the FMAA group at USI. She collaborates on the Foldcast project, exploring paper-based formwork to structurally optimize concrete elements and reduce material use in construction.
